Wells, Springs, and Fountains

Natural Resource

water sources

Throughout the Leoniceno territory, over the past centuries, water supply for citizens was provided at specific points where wells and fountains existed; for owners of agricultural estates (manor houses and villas), however, water resources were for private use and consumption.

For those living in the hills, water resources have always been a major problem. For this reason, springs and fountains were used and wells were built with specific designs and functions, featuring different types and structures.

In any case, for their construction, easily available materials were preferably used, such as stone and soft stone for decorations, bricks, iron, and wood.

The Berici hills, due to their geological and morphological formation, give rise to karst phenomena, which through sinkholes and other water absorption systems feed the springs and thus minimize the presence of surface water.

The most significant springs in our mountains are located in the Acque and Monticello areas; smaller springs are found in other locations, while wells are scattered throughout. Also noteworthy is the Pozzo della Spelta, a well located between Montorio and Monte Pozzetto at an elevation of 163 meters, built unusually on the edge of a sinkhole at the forest margin.

The two most famous fountains are the Fontana del Lavello in the Monticello area, and the fountain-washhouse located in the Acque area, from which one can enjoy a magnificent view of the Veneto plain.

Also worth mentioning is Almisano, a spring area among the most important in Veneto, which supplies water to a vast area and which also recalls in the names of some of its streets the presence of numerous streams and canals.
